One year before the anniversary of the independence of the United States, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to George Washington.

The first President of the United States is considered one of the country's founding fathers. As Chief of Staff of the Continental Army, he played a pivotal role during the Revolutionary War from 1775-1783 and helped lay the foundations of the young American republic. Washington had very close ties to France, particularly through his relationship with the Marquis de Lafayette, to the extent that he was granted honorary citizenship in 1792.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION

The obverse of this coin depicts a bust of George Washington based on a statue sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon and displayed in the Virginia State Capitol in 1792. In the background is the flag of Betsy Ross, with each of the thirteen stars representing one of the founding colonies of the United States.

The reverse is dedicated to the seal of the Continental Army, historically stationed under the command of George Washington in 1775. The seal depicts a serpent flying above a military trophy consisting of armor, crossed banners, and arms. This composition refers to the military strength and resilience of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
